Setting Place:the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island in Boston Harbor Period: after world war 2
Main character—Teddy Teddy's real identity is Laeddis, who went into the battlefield as a soldier, returned to his hometown after the war as a police officer, married a wife and had children, the bitter fighting in World War II and the experience of participating in liberate the concentration camp of the Nazis left him a serious psychological shadow, which made it difficult for him to enter life completely and normally, so it was inevitable for his wife and children. His wife took drugs for a long time, which gradually led to the outbreak of mental illness. One day, the insane wife drowned her three children in the lake of her homeland. When Laeddis came home to see all this, he was so sad that he ended his wife's life with a pistol and set fire to his house in a state of extreme mental tension. Great pain has split his personality, enabling him to imagine another person, another story, so that he can run from these painful realities, the split part of himself is looking for another part of himself , he is exploring hardly in his imaginary world.
Statement —relationship with course question
The story is mainly about A person resists to his past and fears of himself. In life, there much things that people fear about, and one of those things is people ourselves. People all have bad memories of past, some of those goes out of our mind easily as time goes on, some of those things make us afraid of, and want to escape from what we’ve done, who we are or what happened to us. This kind of horror is personal, it takes away happinesses, makes souls jailed, it let people living in the memories of shadows and can’t escape from them. The story happens in the period after World War Two. In that time, some of the veterans can not walk out of the shadow that is given by war. Teddy is one of them, because of his strong postwar spiritual performance, he cares about his wife and children, but neglect to love and rest with them. I appreciate the portraits of characters in this film. In the film, some scenes depicted in Teddy's heart and his soliloquy vividly, they describe the postwar emotions and moods of the veterans and the sins they think they have. At the same time, these descriptions also highlight Teddy's powerful psychological defense mechanism. They can be used as a cushion for the subsequent plot, or as a separate element of the film - the description of fear.
